Wildfire Wildlife And Wild Horses - Is There A Connection?

MEDFORD, Ore., May 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Catastrophic wildfire is deforesting America at an alarming rate and as it does the firefighting business is booming.

The 2018 U.S. Forest Service (USFS) budget of $2.5-billion for fighting wildfires (aka: 'management' and 'suppression') has only about 3% of that amount dedicated to wildfire prevention. As it appears, there is little financial incentive to engage in wildfire prevention. And most of the 'prevention' that is funded in the USFS budget relates to more burning, as in 'prescribed burns', which in some cases leads to uncontrolled wildfires.

The environmentalists of the 1980's argued that logging at that time was unsustainable, however forests today are now being destroyed by catastrophic wildfire at a rate that far exceeds any deforestation that is alleged from a sustainable logging industry.

Catastrophic wildfire, which is not normal wildfire, is generated and fueled by excess grass and brush in and around forests and the wildland urban interface (WUI). These prodigious fuels have evolved due to the depletion of large bodied herbivores, specifically deer in the western states of California and Oregon where the decline in deer is approaching 3-million animals over the past 5 decades. Those deer missing from the forest and grasslands ecosystems had been mitigating about 2.6-million tons of annual grass and brush via their ubiquitous grazing.

During a recent May 4th interview on theDoveTV network naturalist and rancher William E. Simpson II outlined the serious issues related to the mismanagement of forests, wildfire, wildlife and wild horses.

In his book The Mustangs (pub. Southern Methodist University Press, Dallas 1952), J. Frank Dobie wrote that in the early 1900s more than 2-million wild horses roamed freely throughout America and on the plains.

Today that former population of native species American wild horses has declined by 97%; there are less than 68,000 wild horses running free in America today.
