Symposium on the Vulnerabilities of the Québec's Arctic Territory in the Context of Climate Change

QUÉBEC, April 17, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - University and Ouranos consortium researchers along with specialists and representatives from the Québec Government, the Kativik Regional Government and the Makivik Corporation will meet on April 19, 2018, at the Symposium on the vulnerabilities of Québec's arctic territory. The event has been organized by the Ministère des Forêts, de la Faune et des Parcs (MFFP) and will be held in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik.

The day will be dedicated to presenting research results on changes in climate, the physical area, the environment and biological resources in the context of climate change. The connections between the changes in the ecosystem and the lifestyles of residents of northern communities will also be discussed. This research was conducted as part of the 2013-2020 Climate Change Action Plan. It aims to provide basic knowledge about the Arctic ecosystems and environment to support the development of Nunavik communities.

In the long term, this research will allow us to understand the nature of climate change in Québec's Arctic territory, assess the impacts of these changes on the physical environment and biological resources of the Nunavik territory and establish potential links to climate change adaptation in the communities.

Experts from the MFFP and Université Laval will use this opportunity to unveil four jointly produced maps. These maps provide key ecological information about the North and cover topics such as permafrost, surface deposits and vegetation. They present the most complete and precise ecological portrait of this immense territory. This data is easily accessible on the Données Québec website and on the interactive map, completely free of charge.
