Closing of the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games


Congratulations to the athletes and all those who made the 2018 Arctic Winter Games possible

SOUTH SLAVE, NT, March 24, 2018 /CNW/ - Over the past seven days, 1,300 Northern athletes from Canada and 600 international competitors, artists and performers have come together in the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, to showcase their talents at the 2018 Arctic Winter Games.

These Games are the largest and most important multisport cultural event in the circumpolar North. The athletic competition featured modern sports alongside traditional Arctic (Inuit or Northern) sports and Dene games, while the cultural component featured visual arts, dance, ceremonies and galas from artists across the circumpolar regions.

The Government of Canada is proud to support these Games and congratulates all participants who spread the power of sport and culture in the North.

The Government of Canada is a proud supporter of this edition of the Arctic Winter Games, providing more than $1.1 million in funding.

The Arctic Winter Games were held in the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories from March 18 to 24, 2018. This was the 25th edition of the Games.

The Arctic Winter Games is the largest and most important multisport cultural event in the circumpolar north with approximately 1,900 participants in total: 1,300 from Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Northern Alberta and Nunavik), and the remainder from Alaska, Greenland, Russia and Scandinavia.
