Metro Toronto Convention Centre Food Donation Program Fights Hunger in Toronto

TORONTO, March 20, 2018 /CNW/ - The Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) announced today that it has contributed over 90,000kg of food to organizations in Toronto that support individuals struggling with hunger in its 2017/18 fiscal year.

The MTCC's successful food donation program partners with events and conferences to reduce food waste and ensure that extra food items are donated to organizations in Toronto that help fight hunger in the community. These organizations include Daily Bread Food Bank, Second Harvest, TDSB's Student Nutrition Program and Margaret's Housing and Community Support Services.

The most substantial single-event food donation of the year resulted from the Loblaw Companies Limited conference in early 2018. The event's exhibitors contributed 27,990kg of food to Second Harvest and Daily Bread Food Bank, the equivalent of 16 mid-sized cars. The Loblaw donation was planned well in advance of the event, and the donation to Daily Bread Food Bank alone helped support over 2,000 people in need in Toronto.

The MTCC also donated over 55,000kg of reusable materials from events and conferences in its 2017/18 fiscal year. The recipients of donated materials included Habitat for Humanity, TDSB's Arts Junktion Program and Red Door Family Shelter.

"The in-kind donations Margaret's Housing and Community Support Services receives from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre have a quantifiable impact on the physical and emotional lives of the people we serve ? women, the homeless and those living with mental illness. They also help us play a small part in making our planet more sustainable," says Diane Walter, Executive Director at Margaret's Housing and Community Support Services.

"We are very proud of the success of our donation program. It stands as a key element in our Centre's commitment to making a positive impact in the local community," says Barry Smith, President & CEO at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
