Kalorama Information: EMR Interoperability, AI and a Surprise Jared Kushner Visit Among Events at HIMSS
ROCKVILLE, Md., March 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Market researcher Kalorama Information noted that the HIMSS summit this year in Las Vegas may not have answered all the issues in electronic medical record, but did hint at the direction of the Trump administration. Other speakers hinted at lessening of requirements for EMR reporting. The meeting also featured innovative products including Apple Watch technology and AI ? infused EMR products. Kalorama covers events in its report EMR Market 2017, and the firm plans a study this year.
The Trump administration is pushing for greater patient control of health data, including potential mandates and fines for EMR platform sharing. Seema Verma, CMS Administrator, announced the Trump administration's MyHealthEData initiative. The administration intends to give patients more control over their data. As a sign of the importance of EMR patient data to the administration, White House adviser Jared Kushner was at the HIMSS meeting and spoke on patient access "Medical data belongs to the patient," Kushner said.
In addition, the following were among events at the meeting:
Verma also announced an overhaul of the government's EHR incentive programs, and John Fleming of ONC Deputy Assistant said "We feel that we need fewer regulations, rather than more." These were seen as signals that the administration may loosen reporting for meaningful use, which has earned the ire of physicians who feel the process is a burden.
United Healthcare is bringing the Apple Watch into its United Healthcare Motion wellness program. United Healthcare Motion participants pay tax and shipping for an Apple Watch and then apply earnings from the program to "pay off" the cost of the device. They will own it after they have racked up enough activity.
AI was a common topic of discussion at the meeting. Epic Systems Corp. has integrated Nuance's AI-powered virtual assistant into its EMR, the system allows mobile access to lab results, medication lists, visit summaries and other information in the Epic Haiku mobile app with voice technology to direct operation.
Apple and Amazon and the entry of these companies into the marketplace were topics of discussion. "The Amazons and Apples of the world have mastered service, and they are coming for us," said Adrienne Boissy, chief experience officer at Cleveland Clinic Health System.
