Statement by Minister Duncan on the Announcement of Canada's Flag-Bearer for the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony

Minister Duncan congratulates Brian McKeever, who will carry Canada's flag at the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, March 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Congratulations to Brian McKeever, who today was named Canada's flag-bearer for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. It is an honour for Canada to be represented by such a strong and promising team, led by a flag-bearer who reflects the values of our athletes and the entire country.

McKeever is a 13-time Paralympic Games medallist in para Nordic skiing and made history in 2010 when he was named to both the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams.

The Government of Canada is proud to see the Paralympic movement grow stronger and stronger, with athletes who continue to inspire all Canadians, especially our youth. From March 14 to 19, 2018, I will travel to South Korea to attend the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. While there, I will visit Canada House and the Athletes' Village, participate in bilateral meetings and cheer on Canadian athletes at various events. During the Games, I encourage all Canadians to join me in cheering on our Paralympic Team. Your support for the movement and our athletes allows them to enter the Games confident, and determined to make this journey a success.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I commend Brian for his dedication to para Nordic skiing and to our country. Eyes around the world will watch him wave the maple leaf with pride as he leads incredible athletes into the stadium. I wish Team Canada every success on the rest of its Paralympic journey.
