Travel Insurance May Not Cover These Onboard Cruise Activities, According to Squaremouth

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- With high onboard medical costs, cruisers look to travel insurance to protect themselves. However, they may not realize that participating in certain activities can lead to a claim denial. For example, rock climbing and surfing are commonly excluded. Now cruise lines are offering onboard simulators of these and other activities. So while, in the past, the only worry while on a cruise was overeating or getting a sunburn, there are now a few other things travelers need to consider. Leading travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, warns travelers of onboard cruise activities that may not be covered.

Onboard Adventure Simulators
Activity simulators are often a safer alternative but there is still a degree of danger involved, and for this reason, a claim may be denied if the traveler gets hurt while on an onboard activity simulator. Check the activities your cruise ship offers before you choose your travel insurance policy. If there is an activity you know you will want to participate in, look at the policy's detail to see if it is an excluded activity. If it is, consider the upgraded Hazardous Sports coverage.

Rock Climbing Wall
Some policies exclude rock climbing and may deny a claim if a traveler has a medical emergency while on a rock climbing wall.

Zip Lining
Some policies exclude zip lining and may deny a claim if a traveler has a medical emergency while zip lining onboard a cruise.

Surfing Simulator
Some policies exclude surfing and may deny a claim if a traveler has a medical emergency while on a surfing simulator.

Intoxication Never Covered
Travel insurance will never cover a traveler if there's proof that they were intoxicated, no matter what they were doing when they got hurt or became ill. If a traveler is treated for an injury or illness and their medical documentation indicates that they were drinking past the legal limit, the claim will be denied.
