ESPACE GO Reopens After Renovations

The Government of Canada supports the new look of Théâtre ESPACE GO

MONTRÉAL, Feb. 22, 2018 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, attended the reopening gala for Théâtre ESPACE GO, which had undergone several months of renovations.

In February 2017, the Government of Canada awarded $2,929,571 in funding to the theatre through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. This support allowed it to upgrade its spaces and install new equipment that will enrich the experience for audiences and the users of ESPACE GO.

Through Budget 2016, the Government of Canada dedicated an unprecedented $168.2 million to the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund over two years. This was followed by an additional $300 million for the fund over 10 years in Budget 2017.

"The reopening of ESPACE GO is wonderful news. This performance venue has been at the heart of the theatre scene in Montréal for years. Our government is proud to have supported this project to ensure the sustainability of this creative place and improve working conditions for artists."

?The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage

"Today we are very pleased to reopen Théâtre ESPACE GO to the general public. We are very grateful to the many partners, including the Government of Canada, who assisted us in protecting and promoting the essential role that ESPACE GO plays in the community. The vision of ESPACE GO should be ambitious. It needs to remain focused on artistic excellence, on support for initiatives in search of meaning and substance, and on its unique mission, based on the appreciation of women's contributions to the evolution of theatre."

?Ginette Noiseux, General Manager and Artistic Director of ESPACE GO

Quick Facts

ESPACE GO, a creation and performance venue, aims to develop new forms of contemporary theatrical creation with a particular focus on women's contributions. It has been in its current location on Montréal's Plateau-Mont-Royal since it was built in 1994.

Funding of nearly $3 million, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, allowed the theatre to renovate and to improve spaces and conditions for production and creation.

With the completion of this project, the theatre can now accommodate two theatre companies, UBU compagnie de création and Porte Parole, allowing it to reach new audiences of all generations.
