Uncommon Flavors of Europe Launches "Learn & Earn" Study Trip to Italy Contest

PETALUMA, Calif., Feb. 20, 2018 /CNW/ -- The "Uncommon Flavors of Europe" campaign co-financed by the European Union, has launched an online "Learn & Earn" contest for a trip to Italy to visit the production areas of the campaign partners which include: Asiago PDO cheese made in the regions of Veneto and Trentino, Speck Alto Adige PGI lightly smoked, air cured ham made in the region of Alto Adige and Pecorino Romano PDO cheese made in the regions of Sardinia and Lazio. Each of these three products is a testament to the rigorous standards which agricultural products must meet in order to receive the European quality system certifications of guarantee: PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication).

Seven winners will be chosen on May 31st, 2019 and the trip will take place in Fall 2019. Winners will be part of a culinary mission with several other winners and must agree to travel dates set forth by tour operators. The approximate travel dates are departure October 3rd, 2019 and return October 9th, 2019. All flights, hotels, meals and transportation are included in the trip.  The trip is non-transferable. All terms and conditions may be read here: http://uncommoneurope.eu/terms-conditions/.

The three-year campaign "Uncommon Flavors of Europe," having officially commenced in April 2017, is part of the "Enjoy, it's from Europe" initiative adopted by the European Union to promote Europe's exceptional foods and wines abroad. Now in the final months of the first year of the campaign, the program will continue intense promotion of the three products and a direct dialogue with consumers through web, social media, press, TV and grocery store demos. Over 350 promotional days were held in 2017 alone, with 1,750 planned in the three-year period 2017-2019, in major American and Canadian supermarket chains, directly reaching 2.4 million consumers in the United States and over one million in Canada.

The Uncommon Flavors of Europe "Learn & Earn" contest allows participants the opportunity to go online and learn more about the three partner products and complete a quiz in order to earn entries in the contest for a trip to visit the production zones of each product.

The Uncommon Flavors of Europe "Learn & Earn" Study Trip to Italy contest is open to residents of the United States and Canada, age 21 and older.

More than just a contest, "Learn & Earn" is an educational experience for participants highlighting the three inimitable partner products and why they are known as the Uncommon Flavors of Europe: place of origin, long history and protected PDO or PGI status. By learning more, and taking a quiz about Asiago, Pecorino Romano and Speck Alto Adige, participants earn and accumulate points in the contest.

About The Partner Products

Asiago PDO is made from milk from cows that graze on lush fields in the provinces of Trento and Vicenza and parts of the provinces of Padua and Treviso. Fresh Asiago tastes of creamy milk and melts easily on your tongue while aged Asiago varies from sweet and yeasty, to nutty and with notes of salted caramel, all depending on the age ranging from 4 months up to 15 months or more.

Speck Alto Adige PGI, made exclusively in the Alto Adige region of Italy, is a unique ham that melds the air-curing traditions of the Mediterranean with the smoke-curing traditions of the Alps. The process begins with the careful selection of high-quality, lean pork legs.

Pecorino Romano PDO dates back 2000 years and proudly continues the rich, long history of ancient Roman sheep's milk cheeses in Italy. The sheep still graze on wild pastures filled with native flora on the island of Sardinia, the Lazio region and the province of Grosseto. Only there can Pecorino Romano PDO be made from fresh whole sheep's milk from October to July.

About PDO and PGI
Of the EU quality certifications PDO certified foods have the strongest possible link to original historical practices, because their ingredients must come from and their production must occur within the natural environment in which the product developed. PGI foods are made with traditional production methods in their historic places of origin.  While raw ingredients can be sourced outside the production area but within the EU, all ingredients are scrupulously monitored for quality.
