Media Advisory - Spokespeople Available for Comment - KPMG expects Canada's competitiveness and tax risks to be the focus of the 2018 federal budget

KPMG in Canada's tax professionals are available pre-budget and on budget day for analysis

TORONTO, Feb. 20, 2018 /CNW/ - Government needs to focus on Canada's competitiveness and tax measures in the upcoming federal budget, says KPMG in Canada.

"There are several talks and policy initiatives currently happening outside of Canada that will potentially impact our competitiveness as a country," says Greg Wiebe, Managing Partner, Tax, KPMG in Canada. "In particular, how the government responds to recent tax changes in the U.S. will be key for the ongoing health of the economy."

What should be in store for Canadians?

Response to U.S. Tax Reform ? As the country faces uncertainty around trade and competitiveness, we could see policies geared towards encouraging business growth through competitive tax measures.

Private Company Taxation Changes - This year's budget could introduce legislation around tax on split income and more certainty around passive income rules. Businesses thrive in an environment where there's certainty, and taxation has to be one of those areas.

Investment in Scientific Research ? We expect to see the government include significant funding for basic scientific research to support R&D activities in Canada. Providing Canada's labour force with the right skills to foster growth in this space will also be a focus.
