PsychArmor Institute Set to Release Five New Caregiver Courses in 2018

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The PsychArmor Institute, a San Diego-based non-profit committed to bridging the military-civilian divide through free, online education courses, today announced plans to expand its offerings in its School for Military Veteran Caregivers and Families to include five new courses chosen by military and veteran caregivers themselves. According to a 2014 RAND study, there are 5.5 million veteran and military caregivers in the United States who often don't have the support they need to care for their loved ones who are sick or injured.

Topics for the courses, which are made possible by a philanthropic investment from USAA, were selected via an online survey distributed to military and veteran caregivers nationwide, and through PsychArmor's extensive network of over 150 advisors and partners, including its Caregiver Consultants and Caregiver Advisory Committee. The five new courses in 2018 include "Creating an Emergency Response Plan for Caregivers," "Intimacy Issues for Caregivers," "Caregiving in a Rural Setting," "Managing Common Behavioral Challenges in Children," and "Am I a Caregiver?"

"Many veteran and military family members, friends, and other loved ones often don't realize they are caregivers," said Marjorie Morrison, CEO and founder of PsychArmor. "When their loved ones are injured during service, they're often thrust into this full-time role without resources or support. At PsychArmor, we're working to change that by offering courses to help meet the caregivers' needs right where they are. We're so grateful that we are able to offer these courses for free thanks to the generosity of our sponsor USAA and we're excited to be expanding the school in 2018."

PsychArmor currently offers two dozen free online courses specifically for veteran and military caregivers. Topics range from understanding the VA to finding respite care, from navigating grief and challenging relationships to caring for the caregivers own unique needs. Courses are developed and led by experts and clinicians with deep understanding of the unique needs of military caregivers and families, and the obstacles they face.

"These hidden heroes deserve our support as they care for loved ones injured while defending our nation," said Harriet Dominique, Senior Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs at USAA. "USAA is honored to sponsor PsychArmor in its work to address this urgent national priority by providing educational content that is relevant, timely, and focused to support these remarkable individuals."

In 2017, USAA received the One Star Foundation Texas Governor's Volunteer Award for Corporate Community Impact for its support of the PsychArmor School for Military Veteran Caregivers and Families.
