January and February fun in New Braunfels, Texas

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas, Jan. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Prices are better, crowds are thinner and many summer destinations make great winter vacations, too. For example, New Braunfels is one of Texas' top tourist destinations. Summer often finds thousands cooling off in New Braunfels rivers and lakes. But winter offers the opportunity for new experiences.

Fishing

Whether you love fishing or have never fished before, the nearly 20,000 rainbow trout that are stocked in the Guadalupe River are a great incentive to try it.

Gruene Outfitters in New Braunfels Gruene Historic District offer expert instruction for beginner fly anglers to learn key components of fly fishing. Novices can learn the basics of fly fishing on a two-hour, on the water class. Trips include rods and tackle and lunch, snacks, and beverages.

Troutfest 2018, February 16-18, hosted at the Lazy L & L Campground by the largest chapter of Trout Unlimited in the country (5,500+ members) includes an Expo with fly-casting lessons, presentations by expert guides, outfitters, and gear manufacturers. There are women-focused events, on-water watercraft demos, kids events and a banquet featuring Trout Unlimited CEO Chris Wood.

Live Music

The Texas Hill Country is hopping with live music venues ? honkey-tonks, dance halls, outdoor concert venues, and theaters. Coming up soon:

On January 20, John McEuen, member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, producer (and musician) on the recent Steve Martin banjo album, and American Banjo Museum Hall of Famer, plays at the Brauntex Performing Arts Theatre.

There's a George Jones Tribute February 8, polka king Alex Meixner celebrates Fat Tuesday on Feb 13, Marty Stuart and Country Music Hall of Famer Connie Smith perform February 15, and there's a Guy Clark and Steve Earle Tribute February 19.

Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, hosts a New Orleans-styled Gospel Brunch with a Texas Twist at the Hall Feb 11.

Food, beer and wine

With its own great restaurants, wine bars, and craft breweries, New Braunfels is a perfect headquarters for exploring nearby Texas Hill Country culinary destinations.

Food

Alpine Haus Restaurant ? Specializes in Bavarian style cooking with influences from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. They also offer an extensive collection of German beers and wine with pairing information on the menu.

Friesenhaus Restaurant features classic German fare and 16 German beers all on draft and served in traditional 0.3 liter to 2-liter glassware. Favorite German wines like Pinot Gris or Spätlese are also available.

New Braunfels is headquarters for the Hill Country Craft Beer Tour and makes a great home base for a tour of the Texas Hill Country's 52 wineries ? now second only to Napa Valley in popularity.

Beer

New Braunfels Brewing Company, a reincarnation of the original 1915 brewery, produces an assortment of wheat and sour beers along with experimental and limited brews.

Guadalupe Brewing Company focuses on beer made from local ingredients, such as honey from an Amish community in Beeville, TX, and wheat from Marion, TX.

The Faust Brewing Company, housed in the 1929 Faust Hotel, has two signature beers, three "Character Signature" beers and a selection of seasonal drafts on tap.

Wine

"Come & Taste It" in the Gruene Historic District of New Braunfels, offers tastings of a Texas winery's newest release, top-selling or hard-to-find wines February 15.

Dry Comal Creek Vineyards, a small boutique wine producer, makes a "Texas Style" wine that includes wines made with native Black Spanish Lenoir grapes.

La Cruz de Comal Winery produces wines processed in a "natural" way - fermentations on natural yeasts; and no additions of acid, sugar, grape concentrate, powdered tannins, artificial coloring agents or sulfites.
