A long-term approach to construction, even in already-established landscapes, is a good idea. "3-to-5-year master plans are necessary," Mr. Hynson said. "Sit down and discuss [with an outdoor space designer] what your end goal is. Ask, 'What do we really want in that backyard? What is going to make us want to walk out there everyday?'" Budgets, potential usage rates by family and friends, typical weather patterns of the area, and lifestyle concerns all should be included in a good pool plan.

The summer is the best time to start planning a pool for the coming year

"Usually by Christmas, we are sold out until mid-June or later," Mr. Hynson said. Good pool and landscape designers get booked almost a year in advance. If construction can begin before the ground freezes in the winter, the installation can go more quickly in the spring, allowing homeowners to enjoy a pool by the very hot summer months. "Serious clients are planning ahead."

Many tasks must be completed well in advance of construction

Municipalities have regulations on where a pool can be placed on a property. Insurance companies also require fencing and other safety precautions. Stone and tile manufacturers may need time to complete and ship an order of patio pavers, pool decking, coping, and tile. Installers must schedule their crews around weather and material suppliers' delays. "A pool isn't an impulse buy," Mr. Hynson said. "Everything has to tie together just right."
