Samples: Total Dust Control Solution Leads to Statistically Zero Exposure

SPRING, Texas, Dec. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Two sources of industrial hygiene testing confirm AIRIS Wellsite Services' proven technology and workplace best practices lead to levels of compliance that surpass OSHA's new, stricter silica exposure standard.

Sampling was completed during a recent project in Arkansas' Fayetteville Shale. All samples bettered the OSHA standard for crystalline silica dust exposure, keeping silica dust exposure levels below the OSHA Action level threshold. 80% of the samples produced results below detectable levels.

Sampling done by AIRIS industrial hygiene experts was confirmed by the results of the operator's own industrial hygiene testing. These extremely successful measurements were recorded at every location sampled, which included hot zones for silica dust exposure including the blender and sand mover. Samples recorded in these areas show employees had a statistically zero exposure to respirable silica dust.

"It's not a matter of simply meeting the standard," says AIRIS district manager Mike Schultz, who took a lead role on the project. "AIRIS examines the unique needs and demands of each project we work on to help operators provide their employees the highest possible level of protection."

Schultz also credits a high level of cooperation from the operator. Pleased with the outcomes produced, AIRIS earned the operator's "Best Decision Award" for outstanding results and customer service. "The partnership we had made this project special, but the results are what make a project a success," adds Schultz.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica is a risk to companies at multiple levels. Employees who breathe silica dust are at risk of chronic lung disease, silicosis or cancer. Employers who fail to maintain OSHA compliance risk fines, penalties and future litigation.

AIRIS' total dust control solutions incorporate engineering and work practice controls to help pressure pumpers and E&P companies achieve and maintain compliance. Employers are encouraged to assess their exposure risk and seek a total dust control solution before OSHA begins enforcement of additional compliance obligations in June 2018.
