Assisi Animal Health Discusses Why Cats Hide Their Pain

PINEHURST, N.C., Dec. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Assisi Animal Health, developer of the Assisi Loop®, an effective non-pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory device (NPAID®) that can be used as pain relief for cats and dogs, discusses why cats hide their pain.

Today's domestic cat has strong genetic links to its forbearers, and the strongest carryover is the instinct for survival.  The reason pain is so hard to see in your cat at home is the basic "hide and survive" mentality.  Not drawing attention to themselves when they are in a weakened condition, finding a place to hide, and attempting to go unnoticed, comes from keeping out of the eye of predators in the wild.

Things to watch out for at home are simple changes to your cat's daily routine:

The above symptoms are a clear indication that something is changing with your cat, and it is essential to get to the vet for a complete physical and orthopedic exam.

Joint pain in cats, particularly osteoarthritic (OA), is not uncommon.  And it can start before a cat is considered "old."  Joints most commonly affected are the hip, knee, ankle, and elbow.

The program for managing pain in your cat is a discussion between you and your veterinarian.  It is frequently a multimodal approach with a combination of drug and non-drug treatments, and includes massage and acupuncture.  NPAIDS (non-pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories) such as laser, therapeutic ultrasound, and pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) devices are additions to a full treatment program for your cat.  This multimodal approach helps address the difficulty of treatment, where drug toxicity and pilling are always a challenge.  At no time should your cat be given human drugs without the express guidance of your veterinarian.

There are always new classes of drugs in development and your veterinarian is the best source of information on what is available to help manage your cat's chronic pain.  But you have to be on the lookout for the signs.

When visiting your vet, ask about the Assisi Loop for use in the control of pain and inflammation in your cat.
