Design Interactive's ScreenADAPT® Improving X-Ray Screening at Portland Airport

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Across America, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Officers (TSOs) are tasked with managing over 7,000 baggage screening areas at over 700 security checkpoints. With national security at stake, it is vital that TSOs effectively scan baggage and identify potential threats. Enter Design Interactive's ScreenADAPT®, a visual search training program developed by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T) in collaboration with the TSA, which has been in use by the Portland (PDX) airport. Airport security management has found that ScreenADAPT® improved detection rate and employee morale, leading to improved safety and security at the airport. The combination of these improvements will directly result in a more efficient and effective security process for passengers, alleviating some of the typical stress associated with travel. ScreenADAPT®'s positive impact on airport operations was recently featured on the DHS website.

ScreenADAPT® uses trainee eye movement patterns to measure visual search performance and identify errors, improving detection accuracy while reducing training time.

ScreenADAPT® is an x-ray training application that uses eye-tracking to measure search performance and identify detection errors. Its adaptive algorithm uses threat characteristics and search behavior data to determine the causes of misses and false alarms, and then adapts training to address a trainee's weaknesses. The application consists of an eye-tracking sensor to detect and capture eye movement with a desktop app to give instructors and trainees access to unprecedented personalized performance and assessment data, including eye movement and where they are looking on screen.

The objective feedback has resulted in improved threat detection, team communication, and employee confidence as the objective feedback given verifies to the user their growth and improvement. Trainees have also stated that they find the ScreenADAPT® program more engaging than other training methods. The results of the Portland airport are consistent with past performance, as a recent study across 4 airports found that ScreenADAPT® showed a 21% improvement in visual detection.

Moving forward, Design Interactive plans on continued implementation of the system domestically and internationally. DI has begun the collaboration process of building custom images to meet unique security demands to effectively replicate the real-world experience during training.
