UP375 : The next generation of Montrealers project their wishes for the future in the Quartier des spectacles!

MONTREAL, Nov. 30, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - What does the new generation of Montrealer hope for the future of our city? UP375, an artistic initiative by Raison D'artTM, visited schools in Montréal to allow students to draw their vision of the future via historical photos. From December 7th to the 10th, these drawings will be projected in the Quartier des Spectacles. The students' animated artwork depicts their dreams for tomorrow's Montréal will be project on the south side of UQAM's Président-Kennedy Pavillion. As part of the 375th's anniversary official programming, this collective project spotlights the inspiring work of 880 students from all 19 boroughs of the city.

Come meet the students, teacher and the entire UP375 team on Thursday December 7th at 5:30pm for the first projection!

UP375 is innovative project that harnesses technology and creativity. Students used tablets to draw, collage, and colour their ideal future communities, superimposed on backgrounds of historical archival Montreal photos. These were then transformed into the Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) to create short, animated loops. A unique AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithm was also developed to transform the student's GIFs into a futuristic stylized version of their work. Finally, all these elements, including the written messages of the students, were interwoven for the final projection.

« My favorite part of the UP375 project was the feeling that I could express my ideas of what we could be doing in Montreal » said Tommy, a student from an Outremont High School who participated in the initiative. "[Working in] the GIF format was also an amazing learning experience."

Lucca, another participant, said he enjoyed the discussions with his peers in the Sud-Ouest. "[There were] a lot of different ideas that I personally would have never thought of," he said. "Also, it was great to sit down with a table of students that were maybe not the type to share, but once we talked, you can see that everyone had really good ideas."

Sarra, a student from Ahuntsic-Cartierville remarked after the project « Montréal is a story to bear in our hearts. »

Viviane, an art teacher from the borough of Côte des Neiges/Notre Dame de Grâce noted that after the UP375 workshops in her class she included more interaction and discussion with her students. « Come back! » she stated.

The UP375 project is also a call for social action. Through this project, Raison d'artTM hopes to inspire the next generation of Montrealers to engage with their neighborhoods and communities. By taking actions, large and small, we can start creating our vision of tomorrow, today.

The images, thoughts, and inspiring messages created by the students will be projected at the Quartier des Spectacles from the 7th to the 10th of December. Come meet the students, teachers and the team behind UP375 on Thursday the 7th at 5 :30pm
