City of Moncton strike averted with tentative agreement

A tentative agreement has been reached between the City Hall Employees Association (CHEA) Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and their employer, averting a major labour dispute at the City of Moncton November 24, 2017.

MONCTON, NB, Nov. 24, 2017 /CNW/ - CHEA members voted on a revised final offer received from the City of Moncton late on November 23, 2017.

Approximately 230 City of Moncton employees who are members of CHEA/PSAC Local 60200 voted on the latest final offer during meetings at the Moncton Wesleyan Church.

The members were originally scheduled to take a strike vote, however the City presented the union's negotiating team with a revised final offer that the team recommended to the members.

"The members accepted the recommendation of their negotiating team and a majority voted in favour of accepting the final offer as a basis for the next Collective Agreement thus averting a possible labour dispute," said Colleen Coffey, Public Service Alliance of Canada Regional Executive Vice-President for the Atlantic Region.

The new Collective Agreement will be brought before the City Council formally on December 4, 2017 to be ratified.

The previous Collective Agreement expired December 31,2016.

Coffey said a discussion between the negotiating teams resulted in the revised final offer.

"The majority of the employees felt that this was the best that could be achieved without a major disruption of services to the citizens of Moncton," Coffey said. "On that basis, they have voted to accept it."

The Local's 230 members work at City Hall, the Botsford Street Fire Station, Codiac Transpo, the Highfield Pumping Station, the RCMP 9-1-1 Call Centre, the Coliseum, the City's Operations Centre,  the RCMP Detachment, Resurgo Place, and at the Magnetic Hill Zoo.
