"Wonder" Fans Experience New Movie in Hollywood Style

PHOENIX, Nov. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Seven fans of the novel-turned-movie Wonder experienced its opening in Hollywood style thanks to the expert artists at XanderLyn Salon in Scottsdale. The fans, who are also patients at the Barrow Cleft and Craniofacial Center, were treated to a pampering session complete with haircuts, styles, makeup and nails.

Half a dozen patients from the Barrow Cleft and Craniofacial Center in Phoenix, including 13-year-old Lizzie Gonzalez (pictured), prepared to see the new movie Wonder in Hollywood style with help from the expert artists at XanderLyn Salon in Scottsdale.

Ranging in age from 11 to 22, these young men and women were born with different abnormalities of the face including Treacher Collins syndrome, the condition affecting the movie's main character, August "Auggie" Pullman.

"Many of our patients are born with facial differences that require multiple surgeries, countless doctors' appointments and other ongoing therapies like specialized orthodontics," says Patricia Beals, DMD, co-director and craniofacial orthodontist at the Cleft and Craniofacial Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. "Not only are we celebrating the release of Wonder today, XanderLyn has given us the opportunity to remind this group of their beauty. Hopefully today will also help them and their families to build new friendships."

Every artist at XanderLyn Salon donated their time and talent to make this day extra special for their new clients. Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, XanderLyn Salon is a high energy, full-service hair salon and beauty lounge that revolves around the science of beauty, as well as creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

"We loved the opportunity to work with Barrow and to have the chance to make today an exceptionally wonderful day for these incredible individuals. We are so lucky to inspire people to feel beautiful on the inside and out," says XanderLyn Salon owner Gaby Miley. "As Auggie says in the book, everyone deserves a standing ovation; and, I think everyone deserves a little pampering now and then too."

As the day's real stars, each patient gave signed Wonder movie posters to their design artists. Accompanied by family and friends, they went together to watch the new film following the makeovers.

"I've never done anything like this before, so it was really an amazing experience for me. I love the way they left my hair and I am so excited to go see Wonder," says Ashley Monjaras, 11. A patient at Barrow since birth, Ashley started a new school for fifth grade this year, just like Auggie.
