Cerritos College Wins Energy and Sustainability Award for Science Building Retro-Commissioning Project


NORWALK, Calif., Nov. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Cerritos College received the California Community Colleges Board of Governors 2017 Energy and Sustainability Award for its Science Building retro-commissioning project that is saving the campus $25,000 in energy cost annually.

The retro-commissioning project involved installing more reliable control sequences on air handlers, making them more energy efficient. The total project cost was $577,000 and included approximately $350,000 of Proposition 39 funds, $46,000 of Investor Owned Utility rebates, and $181,000 of district funds. The project is estimated to save 62,000 kilowatt hours and 6,900 therms resulting in energy cost savings of $25,000 annually. The construction of this project generated more than 160 hours of journeyman and 41 hours of apprentice employment.

Cerritos College is an environmental leader. The Cerritos College Board of Trustees has adopted strong eco-friendly policies to create a campus environment that fosters sustainability through conscious decision-making strategies. In 2014, the College received the Green Community College Leadership Awards from the Green Technology Magazine for its water conservation efforts that is saving the campus 30 million gallons of water annually.
