There are approximately 80 active industry players in the local PEM sector while the motion and control industry, which includes all cylinder manufacturers, has 85 industry players that belong to the South African Fluid Power Association (SAFPA). Statistics South Africa reported that total annual structural metal product sales for the 2016/2017 financial year reached R 32.856bn, 2.28% or R746m down on 2015/2016.

A Difficult Year: The metals industry umbrella body, the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) and industry players reported that 2016 was an extremely difficult year for the industry. Declines in demand, sales, production, capacity utilisation, employment, investment, profit and the number of industry players were experienced. According to role players the most pressing issues facing the industry are insufficient industrial investment, uncertainty regarding government's infrastructure requirements which affect PEM industry products, rising input costs and a shortage of skills.
