Fancy Chess Set Manufacturer, The House of Staunton, Shares the Evolution of Chess

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Oct. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Chess set supplier, The House of Staunton, talks about the history of chess? where it started, and how it came to be the game we know today.

The theory on the origin of chess is debated. However, research and archeological evidence lead us to believe that chess originated in India around 600 A.D. At this time, the Gupta Empire played a similar game with pieces that would later become the knights, bishops, rooks, and pawns of chess.

Later, chess spread from India to Persia and Europe. Trade and conquest brought Europeans into contact with the game. As chess appeared in new areas, a multitude of cultures left their mark on the game.

It was not until sometime during the 15th century that chess began to reflect the game we know today. Early changes to the way chess pieces moved were made at this time to increase the pace of the game, and bring opposing pieces into contact more quickly. Three particular changes from this time period are still reflected in today's modern game.

Each pawn is still allowed to move two squares during its first turn. The King's ability to jump is reflected in castling. The Queen retains her full-range of motion. These changes contributed to developments including the en passant?a move denoting a special pawn capture that can only occur under certain conditions. The substantial increase in the Queen's range of motion is considered to be a major hallmark in the evolution of chess.

Another major landmark in the evolution of chess occurred in 1849, when Staunton Chessmen appeared and were registered by Nathaniel Cooke. The pieces bore the name of England's leading player at the time, Howard Staunton. Since 1849, all serious and sanctioned chess games have been played on chessmen of Staunton design?including this year's Sinquefield Cup Chess Tournament and past World Chess Championships.
