Barlow Respiratory Hospital Publishes Outcomes Book

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Barlow Respiratory Hospital has published its first Outcomes Book. The publication highlights the hospital's unique role in the continuum of adult acute respiratory care, with a focus on patient outcomes. As the only not-for-profit long-term acute care hospital in California, Barlow is recognized for excellence in treating medically complex patients dependent on a ventilator to breathe and is committed to preserving access to continued intensive care of the highest quality for patients.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital Outcomes Book 2017

As pioneers in the care of the chronically critically ill, Barlow Respiratory Hospital has treated and liberated more patients from prolonged mechanical ventilation than any other hospital in the nation. This high volume has helped the hospital build expertise and develop innovative approaches to treat ventilator-dependent patients, most notably using the hospital's TIPS© weaning protocol.

The hospital, founded in 1902 as a Tuberculosis Sanatorium, has a long history of serving adults with respiratory illness. Patients are referred by nearly 100 regional hospital Intensive Care Units for the specialty care the hospital provides as a national leader in Ventilator Weaning.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital's culture of continuous improvement is designed to help referring physicians, patients, and families make informed decisions. For a ventilator-dependent patient and their loved ones, the ability to breathe on their own is the most important outcome.

"Barlow gave me a second chance on life. I have more time to spend with my family, and my grandkids, Thank you Barlow." Former Barlow patient, Mike Martinez

Barlow Respiratory Hospital has been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval® for Respiratory Failure Certification by the Joint Commission which establishes the hospital as a recognized center of excellence for ventilator weaning and management. There are less than one dozen hospitals nationwide that have achieved this certification and Barlow is the first on the West Coast. Barlow has also earned the Passy Muir designation as a Center of Excellence, the only one in the Western United States. The designation was awarded as a result of demonstration of a high standard of care for patients with tracheostomies, on and off the ventilator. Barlow is also an affiliated teaching facility for USC's Keck School of Medicine.
