MAZATLAN, Mexico, Sept. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- When you visit the city of Mazatlán, one of the best ways to get around is the open-air vehicles, known as pulmonías. These cars can be seen throughout the city, and have become a symbol of the region. Similar to a type of golf cart, they are perfect for getting the cool breeze off the ocean and feeling the atmosphere of Mazatlán as you go to your next adventure. The pulmonías has an exciting and interesting history, so much so that a bronze statue of the vehicle has been erected in Mazatlán, a testament to how important and symbolic the vehicle is to the city.
The brainchild of Miguel Ramírez Urquijo, known affectionately as the "Chícharo", he set out to create transportation fit for the modern age. At the time of its creation in 1962, the main way to get around Mazatlán was "spiders," wooden carts with two wheels pulled by horses or mules. This was not sufficient for Urquijo, as he envisioned a vehicle that was not only motorized but would let tourists embrace the beauty of his city.
Creating a prototype based on the three-wheeled "Sui Generis" vehicle, Urquijo brought them from the United States to Mazatlán, despite the pressure from taxi and bus unions in the area. The strange appearance of these open-air cars, as well as their maneuverability and rate of speed, made them immensely popular, and soon became the standard way to travel in Mazatlán.
For over fifty years, the pulmonías have been one of the best ways to travel in Mazatlán and the symbolic pulse of the city. The affectionate name of "pulmonías", translated into English as pneumonia, is a joke that riding in them next to the cool breeze and water from the nearby ocean could give you a case of pneumonia.
The famous vehicle has now been immortalized in the city, as a bronze monument sits near the sea. It shows just how important pulmonías has become to the area, a single idea that changed not only the way of transportation in the city but also the culture and modern feeling of Mazatlán. So if you travel to the area, make sure to visit the monument, and get around the city in a pulmonía.
