Canada doubles funding for leading international body for climate change science

MONTREAL, Sept. 9, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada is committed to supporting climate change science, taking informed action to tackle climate change and helping our country and the world grow cleaner economies. Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, announced that the Government of Canada's standard contribution of $150,000 per year to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be doubled to $300,000 per year for the duration of its Sixth Assessment Report cycle, ending in 2022.

Canada is already one of the 10 top contributors to the IPCC's Trust Fund. The increase in funding announced today will help address the organization's current budget constraints and ensure the delivery of the IPCC's assessment reports over the coming years. These reports are critical in informing our understanding of climate change and how to best adapt to the effects we are facing today, and prevent worst effects from climate change in the future. Canada will also continue to advance its goal of improving gender balance and considerations within the work of the IPCC and enhancing the inclusion of Indigenous Knowledge and perspectives in IPCC reports.

Canada also makes significant in-kind contributions to the organization by supporting the participation of Canadian scientists' at IPCC meetings, being the host of this week's 46^th session of the IPCC in Montreal, and sponsoring the IPCC Climate Change and Cities conference, which will be hosted by the City of Edmonton in March 2018.
