Evergreen Packaging Kicks Off 2017 Made By Milk® Contest with "Sports" Theme

MEMPHIS, Tenn., Aug. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Evergreen Packaging today announced the launch of the Fall 2017 Made By Milktm Carton Construction Contest. This year's contest theme ? Sports ? invites students to build milk carton creations inspired by games and recreation, from archery to ziplining, amateur to Olympic-level. Classroom teams can win up to $5,000 by building novel creations from empty milk or juice cartons repurposed from their school lunches. The deadline for submissions is November 15, 2017.

The 2016 Made by Milk Contest Grand Prize Winner: A SLURPIT serpent carton creation made by Paulsboro High School students in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Last year's contest theme was 'Inventions'; a SLURPIT is a water-cleaning biofilter invention used to absorb and digest oil and pesticides in waterways. The SLURPIT serpent was made from 274 repurposed milk cartons.

"Now in its sixth year, the Made By Milktm Contest gives students of all ages the opportunity to express their creativity while building design skills, teamwork and awareness of environmental issues including sustainability," said Katie Simmons, marketing manager at Evergreen Packaging. "We can't wait to see how students across the country will translate this year's Sports theme into imaginative carton creations."

Students in grades PreK?12 are eligible to compete in the Made By Milktm contest. To enter, classroom teams collect empty milk or juice cartons to use in their carton creations and write a 200-word essay about what makes their project unique. In addition to the Grand Prize winner ($5,000) and People's Choice award ($2,500), there are awards for creations using less than 300 cartons, and creations using 300 or more cartons. The complete prize structure is below:

Evergreen Packaging is the largest manufacturer of gable-top cartons in the United States. Since its inception in 2012, the Made By Milktm contest has garnered nearly 900 entries and Evergreen Packaging has awarded cash prizes to 86 winning schools across the country. Last year's contest theme was "Inventions" and the Grand Prize winner was Paulsboro High School of Paulsboro, New Jersey, which took home the $5,000 award for its Serpent carton creation. Inspired by a "SLURPIT", a water-cleaning biofilter invention used to absorb and digest oil and pesticides in waterways, the Serpent was designed from 274 repurposed milk cartons.
