Brooke Henderson and other golfing pros to take part in charity's first annual golf tournament

MARKHAM, ON, May 26, 2017 /CNW/ - Canadian LPGA star and 2015 Canadian Press Female Athlete of the Year Brooke Henderson will be featured at the first Annual World Vision Golf Tournament, this June 23 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham.

"We are so excited that Brooke is going to lead a golf clinic and play with select teams. She is a fantastic talent and we're honoured that she will be engaging with us for the tournament," said Janice Moro, Philanthropy Director at World Vision.

Henderson is the second youngest player in LPGA history to win a major championship, with her victory last year at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

The tournament is being run by the World Vision Multicultural Council Ambassadors (MCAs), including Tommy Tam (pictured), who engage cultural communities here in Canada to support work in their countries of heritage.

"The multicultural council is a valuable link between Canadians and children around the world. We are so excited to share this golf tournament with our multicultural partners and friends while raising awareness and support for communities to handle disasters," said Joe Daniel, Co-Chair of the Multicultural Council and former Member of Parliament for Don Valley East.

Natural Disaster Preparedness the Focus

Net proceeds from the golf tournament will go towards helping communities around the world become prepared for natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis and typhoons. Through corporate sponsorships and individual donations, the MCAs are hoping to raise $50,000 for World Vision's Emergency Preparedness programs, an essential component of the work being done in many of the countries represented by the council.

"Through World Vision's disaster-preparedness work, we empower community members to anticipate and prepare for future emergencies, to save more lives and minimize adverse impact. Due to our long-term development work, World Vision is often the first to respond with life-saving emergency aid. We also help families recover and rebuild long-term," says Lindsay Gladding, Director, Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs.

Corporate sponsorship opportunities still exist for the event; more information is available at worldvision.ca/golf.
