WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- United States Navy Rear Admiral Thomas Kearney (Ret.), a decorated veteran with over 30 years of service in the Armed Forces, has been elected to the national governing board of directors for American Humane, the country's first national humane organization which has supported the U.S. military, our service men and women, and military animals for more than 100 years. In his new role, Admiral Kearney will use his decades of experience in protecting our country to help protect the nation's animals, veterans, and four-footed warriors. He will work closely with American Humane's Lois Pope LIFE Center for Military Affairs, which administers a wide array of programs and initiatives assisting America's service men and women, veterans, and military animals.

U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Thomas Kearney (Ret.) has been elected to the board of directors for American Humane, where he will help guide their historic programs protecting animals, veterans, and military animals.

Rear Admiral (Ret.) Tom Kearney is the President and Founder of Kearney Group, LLC, a successful independent consulting company advising and supporting over a dozen large and small defense-related businesses. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 2016 after serving for over 30 years, spending 22 years in the operational Submarine Force and 12 years directing acquisition programs at the Naval Sea Systems Command.

During his first 22 years in the U.S. Navy, he rose to the level of Commanding Officer of two nuclear submarines, including the first VIRGINIA Class submarine. He subsequently commanded the first submarine in the U.S. Navy to conduct multiple operations around the world during a single deployment via the Arctic, earning a Navy Unit Commendation.

Following Kearney's sea assignments, he became a Navy Acquisition Professional and directed a variety of Navy acquisition programs, leading more than 500 personnel and managing annual budgets of more than $1 billion.  Upon selection to Rear Admiral, he served as the Vice Commander (Chief Operating Officer) of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), a $30 billion/year and 50,000-person organization responsible for the design, procurement, and support of all U.S. Navy ships, submarines, and aircraft carriers.

Kearney has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Villanova University, a nuclear engineering and operations background with the U.S. Navy, a master's degree in International Relations from Villanova, and is a certified Level III Program Manager from the Defense Acquisition University with several years of Foreign Military Sales expertise.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), and various other personal, campaign, and unit awards.

In addition to serving on a variety of defense executive boards while in the Navy, he volunteered to lead the NAVSEA Flag Level advocacy program for Wounded Warriors and disabled employee support programs as well as championing service dog engagements in the workplace. Following his retirement from the Navy, he continues supporting veterans and service animals by serving as a member of the American Humane board of directors.

"I am honored to become a part of the historic American Humane organization," said Admiral Kearney. "In addition to carrying on their 140-year legacy of protecting animals around the world, I look forward to working with their Lois Pope LIFE Center for Military Affairs to advance the necessary support and protections for the nation's human and canine warriors who have done so much to defend our freedoms."

"American Humane is grateful to gain the guidance of such a distinguished military leader on our board of directors," said Dr. Robin Ganzert, American Humane president and CEO. "We thank Admiral Kearney for his long service to our country and for now turning his wealth of leadership experience to serve those in greatest need."
