TORONTO, Oct. 6, 2018 /CNW/ - With 240 volunteers taking part, the Daily Bread Food Bank had all hands on deck during the 2018 Daily Bread Thanksgiving Sort. The food donation goal for this year's Thanksgiving Food Drive has been set at just over 1 million pounds.

Neil Hetherington, CEO of the Daily Bread Food Bank, kicked off the event with high hopes to meet the donation mark. "The targets are always ambitious and this year was no exception" said Hetherington. "We know that people across Toronto and the GTA have it in them to give and this year's volunteer turnout was a perfect example of that. With over 500,000 pounds of food donated ? and less than two weeks left in our Thanksgiving campaign ? I encourage everyone to step up and do their part during this giving season," Hetherington added.

The four week Thanksgiving campaign concludes on October 14. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donors across Toronto and the GTA, Daily Bread estimates that fall drive goals are on track to being met.

Toronto Mayor John Tory was also present to lend a helping hand at the Daily Bread Food Bank. "When it comes to finding a way to provide support to helping those who are less fortunate, we have to do it together" said Mayor Tory during the food sort. "It's important that we leave here today and multiply what we were able to accomplish ? whether that means volunteering or donating."

The public is being asked and encouraged to take part. The Daily Bread Food Bank is working alongside five other major Toronto and GTA food banks to hit donation targets.

The six food banks taking part in the Thanksgiving Food Drive includes:

Food donations can be dropped off at participating fire stations and grocery stores across Toronto and the GTA. Most needed items include: canned fruits, canned vegetables, rice, pasta, and high protein goods such as peanut butter.

The Thanksgiving campaign also has a monetary donation goal set at $860,000. With every dollar donated, participating foods banks will be able to provide meals to those struggling with hunger.
