Governments of Canada and PEI investing in safer roads for residents and visitors

CARDIGAN, PE, Oct. 5, 2018 /CNW/ - Modern and efficient roadways are crucial to encouraging and supporting economic activity, facilitating trade, and creating middle class jobs. The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island are investing in well-planned infrastructure that will make it easier to move people and products across the province, while supporting sustained economic growth for years to come.

The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food, and Member of Parliament for Cardigan, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Paula Biggar, Prince Edward Island Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy, today announced joint support of over $3.5 million for extensive road improvements across Prince Edward Island.

The Government of Canada is contributing more than $1.7 million through the New Building Canada Fund's Provincial Territorial Infrastructure Component ? National Regional Projects program. The Government of PEI will provide the remainder of funding.

Work includes resurfacing, shouldering and improving culvert structures at 16 locations across PEI's National Roads and Community Connectors.

These improvements will increase road safety, allow for the efficient movement of travellers and goods, and extend the use of overall road network for decades to come.

Quotes

"The Government of Canada recognizes that smart investments in infrastructure help grow the middle class, promote sustainable development and safeguard public health and safety. Working in close partnership with the province, these improvements to PEI's roads and connectors will ensure that people and products move quickly and safely from home to work, or from harvest to warehouse."

"Prince Edward Island's comprehensive road network is of crucial importance to Islanders. Our roads allow Islanders to get to work safely and it allows businesses to grow, prosper and connects our quality Island products to markets domestically and globally.
