Hydropower Stations Are Not Recreational Areas

Stay Clear, Stay Safe this Thanksgiving Weekend

TORONTO, Oct. 5, 2018 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is reminding the public to stay away from hydropower stations and dams this Thanksgiving weekend.

"It's extremely important to obey all warning signs, buoys, booms and barriers near our generating facilities," said Mike Martelli, OPG President Renewable Generation. "Enjoy this Thanksgiving weekend, but remember to stay clear, stay safe when on or near Ontario's waterways.  The water level can change quickly and change without notice."

OPG operates 66 hydropower stations and 241 dams on 24 river systems in Ontario. Most of these facilities are remotely controlled. In certain conditions, water levels near OPG dams and stations will change without notice, making them unsafe areas for swimming, boating or fishing.

OPG recently launched a new water-safety campaign with a public service announcement featuring the harrowing tale of Dammy the Beaver. An avid angler, Dammy learns first-hand about the dangers of fishing near hydro dams and generating stations. His message to everyone tempted by the waters around such structures is to stay clear, stay safe, because your life may be at risk. The campaign has run all summer on major Ontario networks, and is part of a broader multimedia strategy, including print and online ads, promoting water safety around OPG's dams and hydroelectric generating stations.
