Janus Global Operations clears Iraqi technical institute of ISIS explosives; school can now rebuild to serve thousands of students

LENOIR CITY, Tenn., Oct. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The removal by Janus Global Operations of explosive devices planted by ISIS to maim and kill professors and students, means that Iraq's Mosul Technical Institute can now be rebuilt to again serve thousands of students who will help build a stable future for Iraq.

Military explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other booby-traps and unexploded ordnance were among the hazards Janus Global experts discovered during their five-month Technical Institute clearance project. The school is located in the northeast corner of Mosul, a city with almost two million inhabitants, composed of mostly Muslims along with small Christian, Yezidi, and Shabak communities.  Mosul is located about 250 miles north of Baghdad, Iraq's capital.

Janus Global, which is providing explosive remediation services in Iraq on behalf of the U.S. Department of State's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, is an integrated stability operations company that provides demining and munitions management, as well as security, among its broad range of stability support services.

The Mosul Technical Institute offers four-year bachelor's degree and two-year master's degree programs, and, at full capacity, issues 4,300 degrees each year. Under ISIS occupation, however, programs and infrastructure were dismantled or destroyed.

With the recapture of Mosul on July 21, 2017, by Iraqi military forces, after ISIS's two-year reign of terror, officials discovered that, like much of the city, booby traps were hidden throughout the Mosul Technical Institute campus, hazardous materials were found in most of its laboratories, and many of the school's training systems were destroyed.

Janus Global experts cleared 140,000 square meters of grounds and buildings using methods such as soft-ground search techniques; explosive detection dogs; mechanical equipment to move cleared large debris; and hands-on, step-by-step inspection of buildings.

Discovered were 62 explosive hazards, equivalent to 187 kilograms (413 pounds) of TNT. Thirty-one were IED's or IED components, and 31 were unexploded ordnance. Additionally, chemicals used in the manufacture of explosives were discovered and more than 1,900 pounds of explosives-related components were also removed.

Janus Global's Mosul Technical Institute project began on Oct. 5, 2017 and the safer campus was returned to its academic leaders on March 15, 2018.
