AFGE Mourns Loss of California Correctional Officer
WASHINGTON, Sept. 20, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees offers condolences to the family and coworkers of Armando Gallegos, a California state correctional officer who died Friday after he and another officer were attacked by a group of inmates in April.
"Government employees like Armando put their lives at risk every day just by going to work," AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. said. "On behalf of the 700,000 government workers AFGE represents ? including tens of thousands of correctional and law enforcement officers ? I extend our deepest condolences to Armando's co-workers and his loved ones at this difficult time."
Gallegos, 56, and another correctional officer were attacked in April by a dozen inmates at Kern Valley State Prison, about 40 miles north of Bakersfield, Calif. He was recovering from his injuries at home when he collapsed and later died at the hospital.
"Law enforcement is dangerous and thankless work, yet across this country thousands of men and women go to work every day to protect our communities at great risk to their health and safety," AFGE District 12 National Vice President George McCubbin III said. "We must do everything we can do to keep them safe by ensuring our prisons have proper staffing and resources."
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government and the government of the District of Columbia.
