Indiana is one of the nation's premier examples of economic stability, quality education, and diversified economics, building on its heritage of settlement by Southerners and New Englanders after the opening of the territory. Unlike other Midwestern states that were hard hit by economic downturns in the 1980s and 1990s, Indiana had a stable base of a well-educated workforce and industries beyond agriculture and manufacturing. Hoosiers owe a lot to their dedication to education; they were, in fact, the first state in the union to include state-mandated public education in their constitution, and a strong network of public universities and private liberal arts colleges ensures that Indiana students get the education they need.

Indiana's best colleges and universities "are not just big names in the state, or even in the midwest," Managing Editor Carrie Sealey-Morris explains; "institutions like the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University are globally renowned, with reputations for world-changing ideas and discoveries." Indiana's educational excellence was not a fortunate coincidence, however, with "settlers from New England and the Northeast bringing with them the Ivy League standards of institutions like Dartmouth and Harvard, determined to educate and elevate their new home." Traditional liberal arts colleges "built the groundwork for Indiana's professional leadership," while Indiana's top research universities "set standards for learning and discovery in every field from agriculture to aerospace engineering." Since the first settlers from the East, Sealey-Morris writes, Indiana has been "meeting needs, changing lives, and building a better world for Indiana and beyond."

College Consensus is a new approach to college rankings. We combine the latest results from the most respected college ranking systems with thousands of real student review scores from around the web to produce an aggregate College Consensus rating for each school.
