A Wider Circle to Honor Congressman G.K. Butterfield at Community Ball
SILVER SPRING, Md., Sept. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A Wider Circle, a national leader in the movement to eradicate poverty in the United States, announced that Rep. G.K. Butterfield, NC-1, will receive its 2018 Commitment to Change Award. The award will be presented at The Community Ball, A Wider Circle's annual gala, on September 27th at the National Building Museum.

A lifelong North Carolinian, Congressman Butterfield began his career in private practice where he was best known for his successful litigation of voting rights cases that resulted in the election of African-American officials throughout eastern North Carolina. He also served as Resident Superior Court judge, where he presided over civil and criminal court in 46 counties of North Carolina, and later served two years on the North Carolina Supreme Court.
He has represented the First District of North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2004. Butterfield has championed affordable health care, education, investments in rural communities, veterans, renewable energies, and federal programs that support low-income and middle-class Americans. He is the Co-Chair of the Out of Poverty Caucus and a member of the Democratic Whip's Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality and Opportunity. Butterfield serves in the Democratic leadership as Chief Deputy Whip and is the immediate past Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. He sits on the Committee on Energy & Commerce as the 4th most senior Democrat on the Health Subcommittee and is a member of the Subcommittees of Communications and Technology and Energy.
