First Nations University of Canada and Cape Breton University to each receive $75,000 from the Ted Nolan Foundation

REGINA, Saskatchewan, Sept. 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ted Nolan was pleased to present a $75,000 donation to First Nations University of Canada at their Regina Campus today. The funds will go towards their bursary program to grant Rose Nolan Scholarships to assist First Nations women seeking to improve themselves through education and training. Mr. Nolan will also present a $75,000 donation to Cape Breton University at an event in Inverness, Nova Scotia on October 1. As part of the partnership, both universities will hold the funds in trust and directly manage the scholarships.

Ted believes that real strength in our world comes from women. "I wouldn't be the man I am today without the love and support of my mother," said Ted Nolan, Founder of the Ted Nolan Foundation. "Collectively, we need to support our First Nations women to ensure they get the opportunities they rightly deserve so they can become tomorrow's leaders."

"We are honoured to be part of the legacy that Mr. Nolan has established in his mother's name," said President Mark Dockstator, First Nations University of Canada. "The Rose Nolan Scholarship will make a significant contribution to the education of Indigenous women who are the keepers of our culture and traditions."

"The generosity shown to our female First Nations students by the Ted Nolan Foundation is transformational and is directly in line with what Cape Breton University values when it comes to the relationships with Canada's First Nations communities," said President & Vice-Chancellor, David C. Dingwall. "We want to provide endless opportunities for our students and this contribution from the Rose Nolan Scholarship will provide extra support for Indigenous students on their path to a post-secondary education."

In preparation for the 2019-2020 school year, First Nations women enrolled at First Nations University of Canada or Cape Breton University are invited to apply for the $5,000 Rose Nolan Scholarship which will be awarded annually by each of the universities.

To be considered, members of a First Nations community in Canada will have recently completed at least one year of full-time studies. Eligible applicants must also provide educational achievements, career plans and community involvement, along with both an academic and community reference in a one-page essay.

This funding brings the support of the Ted Nolan Foundation to First Nations women attending post-secondary institutions across the country to over $550,000.
