Governor General to Undertake an Official Visit to Newfoundland and Labrador
DETAILED PROGRAM
OTTAWA, Sept. 17, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will undertake an official visit to Newfoundland and Labrador on September 20 and 21, 2018. She will stop in St. John's, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and North West River.
During this visit, the Governor General will meet with provincial officials and community members. In addition, she will be invested as honorary chief commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). This visit will also provide Her Excellency with an opportunity to discover Memorial University's Fisheries and Marine Institute.
Below is Her Excellency's detailed itinerary. Times are indicated in Newfoundland Daylight Time (NDT- 02:30).

Official Welcoming Ceremony
Her Excellency will be officially welcomed to the province by Her Honour the Honourable Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. She will receive military honours, including a guard of honour, the "Viceregal Salute" and a 21-gun salute from members of the 5th Canadian Division, the Naval Reserve, Air Reserve Flight Torbay, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and 5th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group.

Investiture of the Honorary Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard
The Governor General will be invested as honorary chief commissioner of the CCG. Following the ceremony, she will present Exemplary Service Medals to CCG recipients.
The role of the honorary chief commissioner was first established in 1976 with the investiture of then-Governor General the Honourable Jules Leger. Ms. Payette will be the eighth governor general to hold this honorary title. For more information on the CCG, visit www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca.

Viewing of the Queen's Portrait
The Governor General will view the Diamond Jubilee Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which will be on public display as of September 20, 2018, at Government House. The portrait has been in the Ballroom at Rideau Hall, the official residence and workplace of the Governor General, since 2012, and is undertaking a cross-country tour with its first stop in St. John's. This initiative will allow for more Canadians to see the painting in person and is meant to honour and pay tribute to Her Majesty's ongoing and unwavering service.

Visit to Memorial University's Fisheries and Marine Institute
The Governor General will visit Memorial University's Fisheries and Marine Institute. She will first stop at the Centre for Marine Simulation where she will try out the Hibernia Offshore Operations Simulator. Next, she will visit the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources' flume tank where youth from Eastern Edge Robotics will test their remotely operated vehicles.

Hike with Members of the Public on Signal Hill
The Governor General is inviting members of the public to join her for a hike at the Signal Hill National Historic Site, as part of her new initiative called GGActive, which aims to promote health and fitness. Members of the public are asked to meet at the Signal Hill Visitor Information Centre, where the hike will begin.

Public Concert on the Lawn of Government House
Her Excellency will deliver brief opening remarks at a public concert given by the
Royal Newfoundland Regiment Band on the lawn of Government House.

Official Reception Hosted by the Lieutenant Governor and the Premier
The Lieutenant Governor and the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador will host a reception in honour of Her Excellency's first official visit to the province. The Governor General, the Lieutenant Governor and the Premier will deliver remarks on this occasion, and Her Excellency will present honours to three recipients. She will then have an opportunity to meet with residents and key community leaders.

Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador

Visit to 5 Wing Goose Bay
Upon arrival at 5 Wing Goose Bay, the Governor General will meet with the commander of the base, Lieutenant-Colonel Stéphane Racle, to receive an overview of the base's activities. Later, Her Excellency will participate in a familiarization flight on board a CH-146 Griffon helicopter. At the end of the visit, she will meet with Canadian Armed Forces personnel.
5 Wing Goose Bay conducts and supports a wide variety of operations including both joint and combined training. Its primary mission is to support NORAD operations for the projection of air power on the north and northeast coasts of Canada. 5 Wing supports military training for the Canadian Armed Forces, its allies and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). On August 11, 1986, Gus Dalton orchestrated the rescue of 155 Tamil refugees who were drifting in lifeboats off the coast of St. Shott's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Without hesitation, he dumped his own catch of cod to accommodate the marooned refugees, radioing other fishing boats in the vicinity and notifying the Canadian Coast Guard to assist in the rescue. Thanks to his valiant actions, many refugees stayed and became contributing members of Canadian society.
