Beneficial State Foundation Announces Climate Challenge at the Global Climate Action Summit

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Beneficial State Foundation is excited to announce it is developing a Climate Challenge to inspire and reward California state, county, and city institutions that maximize savings, green their supply chains, and engage their communities to take action. The Climate Challenge is truly a triple bottom line platform -- serving people, planet and profit goals -- that will also align banking with public interest values.

Climate Challenge participants will gain access to a platform that makes climate smart purchasing decisions easy and feeds critical data back to the State of California for purposes of evidencing its legislated and Cop21 commitments to lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Included in the platform will be a marketplace of products that have been certified by third-party ratings organizations such as ENERGY STAR, Green Seal, Water Sense, and LEED. Purchases made through the marketplace will automatically calculate and report GHG reduction data to the state. Users will be able to enroll in the "Carbon Drawdown" -- a community engagement program that encourages and rewards people for making other environmentally conscious decisions such as taking public transit, carpooling, and using refillable water bottles -- all of which may also be reported to the state.

The Climate Challenge will be taken up by leading California institutions including, the California State University (CSU) system, and several mid-sized cities including Palo Alto and Elk Grove. These champions are leading the way for the rest of the state, the nation, and ultimately the world. "The Climate Challenge truly speaks to Beneficial State Bank and Foundation's mission and vision," says Kat Taylor, Co-Founder and CEO of Beneficial State Bank and Chairperson of Beneficial State Foundation. "Businesses and institutions are increasingly attuned to their environmental footprint, yet they lack systems to help them easily find and source competitively priced sustainable products, engage with suppliers to influence their environmental commitments, and ensure that their purchases maximize benefits to local communities. The Climate Challenge seeks to fill this void."

"The CSU system is always looking for ways to drive efficiency and sustainability through greening the supply chain," says Arun Casuba, Executive Director and Strategic Sourcing and Chief Procurement Officer in CSU's Office of the Chancellor. "The opportunity for the platform to also incentivize student engagement in healthy and sustainable behaviors is yet another benefit that directly aligns with our student engagement mission."

The Climate Challenge receives support from the Governor's Office of Planning and Research and the Government Operations Agency. Matt Henigan, Deputy Secretary, Sustainability, says: "Our goal is to have every dollar the state spends advance our climate goals and at the same time return real value to California communities; the Climate Challenge is poised to do just that."

Beneficial State Foundation is working with leaders in sustainable purchasing, clean energy, and community engagement to bring this vision to life. Energy Solutions develops and implements large-scale energy, carbon and water management solutions for governments, utilities, and private sector clients. Ecomedes curates and maintains the largest directory of independently certified high performance green-building products in the world. 3P Partners offers a hands-free platform through which users earn a 'currency of good' (Positive Impact Points) for trackable beneficial behaviors that they can use to reduce the cost of safe, healthy food, to pay enrollment fees and other school expenses, or to make a donation.

As Californians recommit to climate action during the Global Climate Action Summit, the Climate Challenge presents an exciting opportunity for communities across the state to be rewarded for climate-friendly actions. The Climate Challenge will launch in California, but the collaborators are seeking to build an ecosystem of buyers, sellers, foundations, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to join and transform banking, buying and behavior.
