San Diego Partnership Champions Education Equity Initiatives

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Winward Academy, a San Diego based award-winning online learning platform, and Enduragive, a San Diego based 501c(3) non-profit whose mission is to connect donors to non-profits, have partnered to raise $50,000 for national education equity initiatives to provide college scholarships and support academic growth and excellence for youth who demonstrate grit, heart, and purpose.

Believing that all students deserve access to quality teaching, the partners will be directing 100% of donations to these initiatives designed to support education and build confidence for students in underserved schools around the country.

"From partnerships with schools, foundations, and charities, I've gained a renewed appreciation for the challenges faced by students. Many possess the heart, work ethic, and passion to conquer the world but lack resources to bring their dreams to fruition," shared Winward Academy founder and University of California San Diego instructor Dr. Jennifer Winward. "The partnership with Enduragive makes these deserving students' dreams come true."

The students supported by this education equity campaign are the ones who have worked their hearts out to raise their ACT scores by double digits and SAT scores by triple digits and who have earned college acceptances to U Penn, Vanderbilt, Yale, Duke, USC, UC Berkeley, and others. Many of these students receive full ride scholarships, while others receive substantial financial support but still have annual gaps ranging from $1,000-7,000; these gaps prevent them from committing to the most competitive colleges. According to Roger Martin, co-founder of Enduragive, "with this partnership, Winward Academy and Enduragive can close those funding gaps to allow students to make those commitments to top colleges and succeed in college and beyond."

Scholarships. Private scholarships raised by Winward Academy and Enduragive fill tuition gaps for bright, hard-working students who evidence grit and determination in achieving success in high school. One of the first scholarship recipients, Somadina Egbuna, was raised in Nigeria until he moved with his family to the U.S. when he was 14. Despite enduring grave poverty and missing a year of school, Somadina was determined to succeed. He earned strong grades, volunteered at a local science museum running the planetarium show, and worked diligently to improve his ACT score by 10 points, bringing him from the 52nd to the 91st percentile. He is the first student in his school's history to attend a top 30 ranked engineering university. According to Somadina, "Winward Academy and Enduragive inspire our confidence and our commitment to excellence, giving us hope about making it out and being successful."

Academic Support. Many community groups and after-school programs support youth facing challenges of frequent moves, illness, foster care, trauma, and poverty. Donations to this Winward Academy+Enduragive initiative support these community groups in their efforts to transform students' academic and professional development. Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) of San Diego is one recipient because of its commitment to higher education as a means of bringing about thriving communities. Donations provide access to the Winward Academy platform for all BLCI high school students and granted a scholarship to BLCI senior Kehila Moreno, who has gained prominence in San Diego and nationally through her fight against human trafficking.

Barbara Chavez Ybarra, Chief Advancement Officer of BLCI, stated "I am thrilled with the academic opportunity made available to our students through the generosity of Winward Academy and Enduragive. Our students now have access to support typically reserved for their peers from higher earning households. They now have many more college doors that open."
