GeoSpace Labs ELD Addresses NWRA Safety Comments to FMCSA

LAKELAND, Fla., Sept. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) has filed comments with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requesting an industrywide exemption from the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate. The comments were filed in response to a request for public input contained in a notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) on drivers' hours of service (HOS) regulations issued by FMCSA and the Department of Transportation.

The comments address safety concerns present in the industry given the multi-stop/quick-stop nature of the waste and recycling route service that drivers execute, and an FMCSA ELD design specification that requires drivers to interact with the device if stopped although they are still technically in driving mode given the federal definitions.

The GeoSpace Labs product, Geowiz ELD, addresses this safety concern, making an exemption for waste and recycling drivers unnecessary.

GeoSpace identified this item early on as a safety issue with the federal specification and notified them of such, and includes in the product the ability to adjust this feature for short-stop quick-stop drivers, providing a sophisticated algorithm that analyzes the actual driving and movement data, and reports correctly the driving status, per the federal specification, onto the drivers logs, without the need for a driver to constantly interact with the device.

The reason to do this is a good one, as drivers negotiating populated areas, or driving around places where families live, need to be focused on safety, not in-cab technology, that could lead to distracted driving. The GeoSpace ELD product is completely automated and requires absolutely no driver interaction at all when the vehicle is in motion, while still accurately reporting and tracking the important federal safety regulations designed to keep drivers, and the public, safe.

About GeoSpace Labs. GeoSpace Labs, based in Lakeland Florida, offers GPS and safety technology designed to help make people safer, every second, of every day.
