Ford must 'abandon revenge projects' before another courtroom slap down: OPSEU President Thomas
TORONTO, Sept. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - OPSEU says today's courtroom slap down of Doug Ford's plan to slash Toronto City Council should be a wakeup call for the premier to abandon his revenge projects and focus on issues that matter to Ontarians.
"It's only been three months, but Ford's rookie mistakes are already piling up," said OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas. "Today's ruling shows just how politically clumsy and over-the-line Ford is. These fumbling and feeble attempts to throw his weight around would be laughable if they weren't so destructive and costly for Ontarians.
"Ford is locked into a cycle of punishment-based policies," said Thomas. "Destroy any progress made during the Liberal era, and punish the City of Toronto, and its councilors who are in the midst of an election campaign. If that's not troubling enough, he's taking Ontario taxpayers to the cleaners in the process."
OPSEU says Ontarians are footing a whopping bill to cover Ford's legal follies.
"It's time Ford learn from his mistakes on the Tesla fiasco and now the Toronto City Council ruling," said OPSEU First Vice-President/Treasurer Eduardo (Eddy) Almeida. "His meddling is madness, and he's about to face another whopping courtroom defeat if he doesn't take fixing our college system more seriously."
Earlier this month, OPSEU filed a charter challenge against Ford's decision to terminate the College Task Force, which was set up to address issues of precarious employment and ultimately improve Ontario's college system.
"For the people, means for democracy," said Thomas. "It doesn't mean issuing decrees from on high. We've already got a president to the south that's a global laughing stock; it's time for Ford's cabinet and backbench to step up and say 'enough is enough' so that we don't become the next big joke.
"Ford can start today, by abandoning revenge projects and restoring the College Task Force, before it's too late," Thomas concluded.
