Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador municipalities benefit from improved public infrastructure

CAMPBELLTON, NL

, Sept. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern roads, and reliable water and wastewater services that will meet their current and future needs.

Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Coast of Bays?Central?Notre Dame, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Derek Bennett, Member of the House of Assembly for Lewisporte?Twillingate, on behalf of the Honourable Andrew Parsons, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, and Her Worship Maisie Clark, Mayor of Campbellton, today announced more than $6.6 million in joint support for road, water and wastewater improvements in 13 municipalities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Government of Canada is contributing more than $2.1 million through the Small Communities Fund. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing over $3.4 million. The municipalities involved will collectively provide more than $900,000 to these projects.

Thanks to this support, families and businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from safer roads to help connect communities and support tourism and expanded economic opportunities for local businesses. As well, the investments in modern, reliable water and wastewater systems will improve water quality, reduce blockages and repair costs, and extend services to additional homes and businesses. These upgrades will safeguard the health and well-being of residents, better protect local waterways and preserve regional ecosystems for years to come.

The Town of Bishop's Falls will also receive funding to repave a portion of Riverside Drive from Brown's Turn to Mill Road. The project will improve road quality, and increase traveller safety along that route.
