The names of 35 workers, whose deaths from occupational disease have been officially recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, will be added to plaques at Leo Gerard Workers' Memorial Park in Val Caron.

The deceased workers' names will be on permanent display at the park, alongside those of dozens of other Greater Sudbury workers who were killed on the job and who were recognized in commemoration ceremonies in past years.

Leo Gerard Workers' Memorial Park was created in 2011 to commemorate Greater Sudbury-area workers who lost their lives due to workplace injuries and occupational disease. It was named in honour of United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard, a Sudbury native.

Gerard will be the keynote speaker at Monday's commemoration ceremony, which is sponsored by United Steelworkers Local 6500.

"Every year in Canada, an average of 1,000 workers are killed on the job or die of workplace-related disease," said Steelworkers Local 6500 President Nick Larochelle.

"It is our duty to honour the memories of these men and women and to continue to fight for safer workplaces, greater enforcement of our laws and true accountability for employers responsible for workplace deaths and injuries."
