Statement by the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour to mark International Literacy Day

GATINEAU, QC, Sept. 8, 2018 /CNW/ - The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, issued the following statement today to mark International Literacy Day:

"Literacy and essential skills are the foundation for lifelong learning, access to opportunity and success. I cannot overstate the importance of the work being done by the Government of Canada to ensure Canadians get access to skills training and support so they can more fully participate in the workforce and in their communities.

This year, the theme of International Literacy Day is 'Literacy and skills development'. Literacy and essential skills are more than just reading and writing. They allow us to identify, understand, interpret, communicate, and use information effectively. Improving these skills enriches people's lives and they are essential for success in a knowledge-based economy.

Employment and Social Development Canada's Office of Literacy and Essential Skills aims to help adult Canadians improve their literacy and essential skills to better prepare for, get and keep a job, and adapt and succeed at work.

If we believe that all Canadians should have a fair chance at success, we must ensure Canadians have access to the services they need to improve their literacy and essential skills.

Let's all take this occasion, on International Literacy Day, to recognize those who work to improve literacy in Canada and around the world, and reflect on ways to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead."
