Tom Irvine elected new Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President


OTTAWA, Aug. 27, 2018 /CNW/ - Tom Irvine was acclaimed as The Royal Canadian Legion's new Dominion President at the organization's 47th Dominion Convention held this year in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"I am looking forward to working with my comrades across the county," says Irvine. "From advocacy to Veterans Services, to working closely with our partners, I plan to give The Royal Canadian Legion my undivided attention over the next two years."

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Irvine is a long time Legion member and retired veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. He joined the Legion's Ormstown #196 branch in 1988 and is currently a life member of Hemmingford #244. He has served in various elected positions at both provincial and Dominion Command levels. Most recently, he served as the Dominion 1st Vice President and Chair of the Dominion Command Membership Committee. Irvine also served with the reserves, in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada for 23 years and was part of a peacekeeping tour in Egypt with the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF 2) in 1975.

Irvine worked with TD Canada Trust before his retirement in 2004. He is also a past member of Argyle-Elgin Lodge #7 GRQ and a member of Montreal's Black Watch Association. A father of four children and four grandchildren, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals in 2002 and 2012.

The Legion's Dominion Convention is held every two years at varying locations across the country, and during which the organization's policies and programs are determined. Incidentally, the 275,000-member organization was formed in November 1925 at the Marlborough Hotel, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
