BNBuilders Commences Construction on Numerous Fire & Life Safety Upgrades at UC Irvine

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its excellent relationship with the University of California, BNBuilders commenced construction on numerous Fire & Life Safety Upgrades at the University of California, Irvine campus in late April. The firm is working with San Diego-based Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects (FPBA) for the $20 million design-build project. BNBuilders has established an outstanding partnership with the University of California (UC) system, completing numerous complex and fast-track projects for UC Los Angeles, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine.

Interior
The Fire & Life Safety project at UC Irvine includes fire suppression systems (alarms and sprinklers) in 16 occupied buildings. The two largest buildings are Reines Hall (built in 1989, approximately 195,000 square feet) and Rowland Hall (built in 1968, approximately 232,000 square feet). Some renovations are being completed in occupied labs, around on-going experiments which must not be disturbed. In these areas, the bulk of the work is completed between 4am to 12noon. Other electrical and lighting improvements are taking place in corridors, and are being completed between 4am and 8am to minimize impact.

Exterior
Additionally, to be able to add fire sprinklers, Rick Engineering is increasing the main water line to 12-inch piping, and accordingly upgrading the lateral drainage. All upgrades are anticipated to be complete in January 2020.

Melanie Ziemniak, LEED AP, DBIA Associate, Project Manager at BNBuilders, states, "The entire team on this project has been an absolute dream to work with.  BNBuilders, FPBA, and Rick Engineering were hired because of their expertise, but the campus fire marshal and facilities manager know these building systems inside and out. Their knowledge combined with our expertise has made this a wonderfully smooth and collaborative process."
