National Nonprofit Day takes over Times Square

NEW YORK, Aug. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Planning to visit Times Square on Friday? Don't be surprised when you see volunteers from different nonprofits lining the streets. August 17th is National Nonprofit Day, and this year Five Tier, a Manhattan based company tasked with managing much of the content on billboards worldwide, has teamed up with numerous organizations to commemorate their hard-work, and help raise awareness for their cause using the bright city lights.

"We spend the majority of our lives helping big brands sell their wares," says TJ Allan of Five Tier, "our team felt it was important to begin giving back to those who work so hard to make the world a better place. Creating this program levels the playing field for organizations with limited marketing budgets to stand side by side with the bigger players of the world."

National Nonprofit Day was founded by Sherita J. Herling to celebrate those who dedicate their time to making a difference in the world, and recognize all of the incredible charitable organizations.

"Girl Scouts of the USA is the preeminent non-profit leadership development organization for girls with programs in virtually every U.S. zip code," said Mishka Pitter-Armand, GSUSA Vice President of Brand Marketing. "National Nonprofit Day is an excellent opportunity to bring to life our message that Girl Scouts prepares girls for a lifetime of leadership. Girl Scouts are proven to have more confidence, seek challenges to a greater degree, take an active role in decision-making, and are more proficient problem-solvers in their communities than their non-Girl Scout peers. And with cutting-edge, all-girl programming including 30 new badges, there has never been a better time to join or volunteer."

It was on August 17th that the Tariff Act of 1894 was put into place, imposing the first federal income tax on corporations and including exemptions for nonprofit organizations.

Five Tier championed the National Nonprofit Day program to give nonprofits throughout the country the opportunity to spread the message of giving back in New York City's iconic Times Square. Over 30 different nonprofit organizations are participating in the National Nonprofit Day Times Square takeover, including Forever Family Foundation, Positive Coaching Alliance, Best Friends Animal Society, New York Edge, Teach for America - New York and many more. Girl Scouts of the USA, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and ATC Alert took the initiative as title participants to help create awareness for all those who give back in their own way.

"Nonprofit organizations offer valuable resources and support to their communities, and #NationalNonprofitDay provides the VFW a unique opportunity to band together with other organizations dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those we serve," said VFW National Commander B.J. Lawrence. "For nearly 119 years, the VFW has dedicated itself to offering transparent service to veterans, military and their families, and we're proud to be among those spotlighted on such an important day."

"Postive Coaching Alliance is proud to support National Nonprofit Day. We believe in the idea of giving back, doing right and treating others with respect. At all times," said Darrell Johnson, the Executive Director of the Positive Coaching Alliance, New York City Staff. "When sports are done right, sports teach confidence, resilience, grit, perseverance, and teamwork--qualities we all want on our teams at work, in our friends, and in our kids. Sports teach kids these qualities and many more, provided kids get and stay in the game."

National Nonprofit Day also honors the impact these organizations have around the world. For example, following the U.S. recession, in 2012 the nonprofit sector provided 5.4% of the nation's entire GDP (gross domestic product), or $887.3 billion; employing nurses, web developers, lawyers, computer engineers and more, according to Johns Hopkins and Tactical Philanthropy Advisors reports.
