Government of Canada congratulates Ginoogaming First Nation on the completion of their housing projects
OTTAWA, Aug. 14, 2018 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is making historic investments to improve housing in First Nation communities, reduce overcrowding, and better safeguard the health and safety of residents.
Today, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services, congratulated Ginoogaming First Nation on the completion of three new duplexes in their community. Indigenous Services Canada provided $873,600 toward the building of these new units and $75,000 to service building lots.
In addition to the new structures, the First Nation also completed renovations to 10 existing homes with a $250,000 investment from Indigenous Services Canada. The First Nation also received $130,000 to support the development of a new housing policy and complete a housing condition inventory for the community.
Ginoogaming First Nation is one of 114 First Nation communities in Ontario benefitting from new housing investments through Budget 2016.

- Indigenous Services Canada provided $873,600 toward building the new duplexes and $75,000 to service building lots. Construction began in October 2017 and was completed in July 2018.
- Indigenous Services Canada also provided $250,000 to renovate 10 homes and $130,000 under the Capacity Development Fund to complete a housing condition inventory and a new housing policy for the community.
- Budget 2016 provided $554.3 million over two years to address immediate housing needs for First Nations people on reserve. As of March 31, 2018, 8,786 homes had been built, renovated, retrofitted, or serviced. Work on an additional 5,178 housing units or lots are underway, for a total of 13,964 housing units or lots serviced.
