Brooks Kushman Partners With Wayne State University Law School


SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Brooks Kushman, a premier intellectual property law firm, is pleased to announce a partnership between the law firm and Wayne State University Law School to the expand the impact of the Law School's Patent Procurement Clinic. This new strategic partnership will provide Wayne Law with support to operate the Clinic on a year-round basis, including assistance by the firm's experienced patent professionals. Brooks Kushman will help supplement the teaching and supervision provided by the Clinic faculty and provide Clinic clients with continuity of representation during periods when the Law School is not in session.

Wayne Law's Patent Procurement Clinic is part of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Clinic Certification Program, and is one of about 36 participating law school patent clinics in the country. The Clinic provides patent legal services to low-income inventors in the Metro Detroit area, offering services such as patentability searches, drafting patent applications, and prosecuting patent applications. The Wayne Law Clinic provides law school students interested in patent and intellectual property law the opportunity to gain practical legal skills under the supervision of experienced practitioners.

David Berry, Of Counsel at Brooks Kushman, serves as part-time faculty and Patent Procurement Clinic Director and Brooks Kushman Shareholder Michael MacCallum serves as the Clinic's Supervisor. The Clinic program includes the Patent Procurement Clinic and Advanced Patent Procurement Clinic courses, in which students learn practical skills for representing inventors before the USPTO. Berry and MacCallum, who are both registered patent attorneys, supervise all of the Clinic's patent services provided by upper-level Wayne Law students with backgrounds in engineering or science.
