AFNQL - Death of Mr. John Ciaccia

WENDAKE, QC, Aug. 8, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) has learned of the death of Mr. John Ciaccia and wishes to offer its condolences to his family and friends.

"Mr. Ciaccia often faced complex issues, in particular during what has come to be called the Oka Crisis. His desire to bring parties together and ensure there were no losers in dispute resolutions has often been acknowledged. He demonstrated the same commitment when personally carrying out various mandates for the First Nations of Quebec," stated Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL.

Mr. Ciaccia was a consultant for the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and was in charge of the program for the Indigenous peoples of Canada in 1969 and acted as the Assistant Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development from 1971 to 1973. He then represented Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa during the negotiation of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975. He went on to become the Minister of Native Affairs in Robert Bourassa's cabinet (1989-1990).

The AFNQL pays tribute to the memory of a man whose convictions have never been challenged.
